Ryan Hughes Projects Presents ... Lena Paschen´s "The Unpresent"

check out the video for a live-impression:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=pIkWfCS8EZo

A three day show from international interdisciplinary artist Lena Paschen in which she explores the notion of the unpresent through a body of new site-specific works.

Lena’s work focuses on the perception of time and place; born in 1985 in Pforzheim Germany and based in Rotterdam after completing a BA in Fine Art at HKU (School of Arts Utrecht) her work finds its inspiration in the everyday environment. Her show at Althorpe Studios and Gallery, which is her first solo show in the UK, is based in an ever

yday environment she is not use to, does not know intimately and is unpresent in, this has led to her superimposing features from her everyday onto the physical structure of the gallery space.

Several of the works are made in common artists’ materials such as print and video but there will also be an ephemeral element which affects these more traditional pieces and the space as a whole.

Lena says;
My installations consist of found objects, sculpture, photography and video, paint, sound and light. My work is subtle and needs the audience to observe its details. It demands the attention of the visitor and does not immediately present itself. Time and minimal changes are important areas of interest in my method [of making work].

Graduationshow HKU 2012

Graduationshow

Down Below 2012

Triangles of Sunnlight 2012         (link vimeo: https://vimeo.com/47082361

you pass me from time to time - Kunstpodium T Tilburg

I presented you pass me from time to time during the group-exhibition "Looking Up" feat. Suzanne van Rest, Maria Gondek, Timo van Grinsven and Sil de Reuver in KunstpodiumT in Tilburg.

You pass me from time to time is an installation consisting of a light-projection, triangle-shaped mirrors, clay and a light source which was flexible at its joint so that it could move and change the reflection. At one point all the reflected triangles would find together and be united in one reflection.

I will add later on more info and pictures/gifs.

`slideshow 54” no. 2011-04-29 ́ . exhibition view at Konstfack 2011
a slideshow of collected/found objects that are recorded in sound and text
54 min loop, 40 objects, always in progress

The sound-slideshow-installation plays with the curiosity of the spectator and demands/asks a lot of patience.
The taken photograph of the collected object has the duration of the underlaying soundtrack which is only hearable with the headphones. So it becomes a choice to participate or not and triggers also the curiousity of the spectator who sometimes has to wait in order to hear the sound. There is no narration in the slideshow itself, so the spectator is free to stay and listen as long as he wants to.
Referring to the attention that I payed to the objects and the value I award them, I would like to activate a recognition of these interests in the common object and give the spectator the chance to rethink his observation and perception of his surrounding.

I think it was from a man ́s shoe. Someone lost it, like I lost my own heel and ... when I was searching for my own heel for my shoes I found that one. I found also my own heel but now I have another one aswell. ...I can ́t tell the size ... ... but someone is missing a heel from his shoe.

one moment show

“one moment show” (2010) exhibition view
mixed media (installation, film, photography, sculpture, readymade objects)

My starting point was to create a space which gives the impression of someone living and working in there. But at a closer look nothing really belongs in that living/working space.
I presented abstract objects while it was part of my concept that it shouldn´t look like a presentation but coincidental and I adjusted what it needed to be coincidentally perfect (the missing links).
There were objects which were associated with something which could fit in the personal living space but still were too abstract to have any use in there (like the shelf with the folded paperbacks).
And there were traces of the presence of a person who just have been there recently and worked/used the space (like the plastic bottle with milk which is left open).
The whole space becomes important when perceiving the moment.
The actions I did while organinizing the space would have been also of interest to be seen as a performance in order to not only present an endwork but leading the spectator to the moment of that and adding other levels like direct time experience. Time is another important factor. The time that already has passed is shown again by photographs in the same space. Also there is a certain temporarity in the objects because of their breakable materials.
