Finally my new website is there!
It´s almost finished and the few unfinished things are about to be changed very soon. Apparently it works the best with browsers like Chrome or Firefox, but I will fix the loading problems with Safari hopefully soon.

A three day show from international interdisciplinary artist Lena Paschen in which she explores the notion of the unpresent through a body of new site-specific works. 

Lena’s work focuses on the perception of time and place; born in 1985 in Pforzheim Germany and based in Rotterdam after completing a BA in Fine Art at HKU (School of Arts Utrecht) her work finds its inspiration in the everyday environment. Her show at Althorpe Studios and Gallery, which is her first solo show in the UK, is based in an ever

yday environment she is not use to, does not know intimately and is unpresent in, this has led to her superimposing features from her everyday onto the physical structure of the gallery space.

Several of the works are made in common artists’ materials such as print and video but there will also be an ephemeral element which affects these more traditional pieces and the space as a whole.

Lena says;
My installations consist of found objects, sculpture, photography and video, paint, sound and light. My work is subtle and needs the audience to observe its details. It demands the attention of the visitor and does not immediately present itself. Time and minimal changes are important areas of interest in my method [of making work].

Inleiding
Heb je dat wel eens? Je bent niet zoekende, je laat je blik niet bewust varen en toch tijdens het onbewuste observeren van je fysische omgeving ontdek je ineens iets dat je aandacht trekt. Zonder te weten waarom, blijft je blik hangen en word je vervuld met een soort ongekende nieuwsgierigheid. Een nieuwsgierigheid naar het leven, naar de dingen om je heen en de oorsprong ervan, naar de fysische verschijningen en hun regels. Alledaagse objecten die soms lijken alsof je ze nog nooit eerder hebt gezien, situaties die door ontraadseling een komisch karakter kunnen aannemen maar zich soms ook verliezen in prachtige schoonheid, natuurverschijnselen die alleen onder bepaalde omstandigheden optreden, maar juist daarom in hun schaarsheid zich uniek vertonen en bekende plekken die plots iets onthullen dat je nooit eerder had waargenomen.

Ze laten je stil staan, je beleeft het moment dat zo toevallig en uniek overkomt, en geleidelijk begin je het te waarderen. Je omgeving is vol van indrukken die er alleen maar op wachten om waargenomen te worden. Ziende, luisterend, ruikend, voelend of proevend. Een in hun perfectie zijn je zintuigen als ze allemaal worden geraakt.

In een tijdperk waarin we overvloed worden met informatie, mogelijkheden en beelden lijkt deze kijk luxe en tegelijkertijd schaars. Er zijn te veel invloeden en prikkels die we iedere milliseconde moeten verwerken en plaatsen naar relevantie, bedreiging en kans. We verliezen soms een beetje de aandacht voor het gebeuren om ons heen.

Toch denk ik dat dit spel met de waarneming van belang is doordat het denkprocessen in gang zet die vervolgens een kritische blik kunnen stimuleren. Deze kritische blik is absoluut niet overbodig.

Maar hoe ervaren we, structureren en evalueren we de alledaagse natuurlijke of gemaakte omgeving? Wat zijn de factoren die de waarneming zelf kunnen beïnvloeden? En welke normen en waarden op de fysische omgeving worden door de waarnemer toegepast?

In mijn onderzoek zal ik als eerste de waarneming der zintuigen analyseren, zowel hun belang als ook de invloeden en voordelen die leeftijd, gezondheid en omgeving spelen. Bijzondere nadruk ligt hierbij op de visuele beleving en evaluatie van de alledaagse omgeving. Vervolgens zal ik me verdiepen in de evaluatie en waardering die we voor onze omgeving kunnen voelen. Het begrip topophilia wordt hierbij toegelicht en ook welke rol hierbij de gezondheid, familiariteit en het associëren inneemt. Daarnaast zal ik het begrip flâneur van Charles Baudelaire en Walter Benjamin bestuderen en een eigen versie hiervan creëren die meer met mijn hedendaagse voorstelling overeen komt. Afsluitend introduceer ik drie kunstenaars die in hun werk of werkwijze duidelijke overeenkomsten met de alledaagse waarneming tonen en methodes ontwikkelen voor het opnieuw ervaren.

De manier van mijn recherche is dan ook inherent voor mijn thematiek. Tijdens mijn onderzoek, scan ik boeken en artikelen, neem ik informatie in een oogwenk waar en beslis wat voor mijn onderzoek van interesse zou kunnen zijn. Dit levert veel informatie op waarvan pas aan het einde duidelijk wordt welke zich zal lenen en van waarde kan zijn.

Graduationshow HKU 2012

Graduationshow

Te ervaren waren 5 werken in een op het eerste gezicht leeg ogende ruimte waarvan één werk hoorbaar was. Subtiele aanpassingen van de ruimte die met de kwaliteiten en mogelijkheden van deze ruimte spelen. De werken tonen zich niet in één oogopslag maar vragen meer tijd en aandacht van de kijker. Een lijst met de titels van de enkele werken was voor de entrée van de ruimte op de muur geschreven.

Down Below 2012 
Een minimale aanpassing aan de ruimte in de vorm van een sierplint. Gelijkgetrokken met de kleur van de vloer en de gewone plinten gaat deze bijna op in de ruimte. 

Forgotten Places 2012 
Een glazen plaat in de vorm van een driehoek hoog geplaatst in de hoek van de ruimte waarop een aantal zorgvuldig gearrangeerde gevonden objecten liggen. Aan de muur geschilderd is de schaduw van een trap die de suggestie wekt omhoog naar de plaat met de objecten te leiden.

Hidden Nuggets 2012 
Een vergulde spijker, geslagen in de muur met twee schaduwen eronder, waarvan er één pas bij nader bekijken onecht en geschilderd blijkt.

Op één muur bevindt zich een abstracte lichtvorm die van tijd tot tijd in beweging komt, ronddraait en hierdoor ook verandert. De herkomst is een op het dak geïnstalleerde lichtbron die door een ventilatie-propeller schijnt. 

Rainy Days 2012 
Een soundtrack van regenwaterloop in de pijpen van het gebouw, die opzwelt en afneemt, soort van readymade-in-sound-remake. De geluidsbron is onzichtbaar in de hoek van de originele waterpijp geplaatst.

fragment van een buitengewoon moment

Daar stonden we dan.

In de heldere duisternis van de nacht.

Een stijging van 9% door steen en bos en een meter verse sneeuw die de wielen laat doordraaien, blokkeren ons de weg. 

Uit de warmte van de auto klim ik achter op de bumper en ben onmiddelijk omgeven door de alles verstikkende stilte van het dichtgesneeuwd landschap, alleen af en toe onderbroken door de hysterische inspanningen van het gas.  

De sneeuw verlicht de nacht en laat het duister vredig achter.

Boven mij de sterren en in de verte het vacuum van de sneeuw doordringend klinkt het geluid van geitenbellen, die bij elke beweging in de warmte van hooi en stro zachtjes schommelen.

I´m doing research on woodturning and found this well-skilled moroccan guy. Apparently all you need is some kind of a construction which holds the stick in position, a bow to get enough speed, handy feet and sharpened tools. And could I hire him as well?

1st press-release

I´m ready to publish my first press-release which I wrote in september 2011 for Galeri Fisk in Bergen. Thanks to Peter van Dijk who took the time to have a look on it. 

This is the result:

Lena Paschen is studying FineArts in the last year of the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Utrecht.

Paschen´s work concentrates on the perception of time and place. In her installations she aims to evoke a specific awareness of the moment and the space surrounding us.

Paschen is curious about the way we value everyday moments, how it easily becomes a matter of course to take our surroundings for granted. In our daily lives lots of information is discarded and filtered out. Through her installations Paschen wants to analyse and emphasize this kind of information, in order to offer the spectator a chance to perceive the ordinary again.

Paschen mostly finds her inspiration in outstanding combinations of objects/forms/colours/sounds with a coincidental and sometimes comical or magical association. She researches different possibilities to present these elements in a new way by placing them in a new context and through playing with contrasts and tensions.

Depending on the occasion her installations consist of found objects, sculptures, photography, video and sound.

In gallery fisk Lena Paschen presents a sound-installation which evokes a familiar impression but the inherent logic is not logical at all.

you pass me from time to time - Kunstpodium T Tilburg

I presented you pass me from time to time during the group-exhibition "Looking Up" feat. Suzanne van Rest, Maria Gondek, Timo van Grinsven and Sil de Reuver in KunstpodiumT in Tilburg.

You pass me from time to time is an installation consisting of a light-projection, triangle-shaped mirrors, clay and a light source which was flexible at its joint so that it could move and change the reflection. At one point all the reflected triangles would find together and be united in one reflection.

installation of light, lightbulbs, power cables, curtains, shadows and reflections, glas, water . duration endless

Playing with the perception of a moment: every moment gives you another information by changing circumstances like turning on and off of lightbulbs as well as changing natural light situation in combination with tools to break and reflect the light. 

As a result the shades and reflections rise and fall during the development of a day and the light paints fragile patterns in the space. 

Leaving some chance is desirable.

The whole exhibition space assumed to be a refridgerator with a soundcomposition coming synchronously out of the 4 corners of the room. The recording of a humming fridgerator motor was interrupted by an edited soundtrack that changed its position in the room and reminded on frogs which were hopping around and croaking.

Further there was the bleakness of the monotonous white combined with an all-encompassing cold, a light tube was turning on at the moment that the entrance door opened and switched off when the door were closed again, and there were artefacts like 4 milk bottles and the inner piece of a thermometer hanging on the wall without giving an indication of the real coldness in the space.
